New School Year, New Club, New Blog: Why We Want to Learn English

We've started up a new year and after what feels like a million scheduling mishaps, our new club has finally come together! We have fewer students this year, five 2nd-years and two 1st-years, which means we can hopefully dedicate ourselves even more to this blog and other fun English activities.

Below, some students' first posts of the year on why they want to learn English.

By 2nd-year high school student Park Sun Kyung:
I want to learn English because I don't want to stay only in Korea. So I will take a trip all around the world with English! Most of all, we live in a global generation, so if we can't use English, we will be outsiders from the world. In reality for high school students, it is important to get great grades on our tests, so all Korean students have to study English hard!
But I love to learn English <3. English is a charming language for me. I can't explain why I like English.
I think English has many differences from Korean. One of them is that English has fewer polite words for the elderly. In Korea, respecting adults is a very very important attitude for everyone. So Korea has many many words that we have to use when we talk to our elders. Others are different.

By 1st-year high school student Choi Yun Hui:
I want to learn English because I'm interested in it. I like listening to English songs, I like watching American dramas, and I want to be an English teacher. But I can't speak English well.

By 2nd-year high school student Heo Su Bin:
These days, I look up to people who can speak English very well. Every time, I also enjoy watching American TV dramas. The actors in American TV dramas are very cool!! They speak English very naturally. I like that, and their mouth movements are very nice.
Everyone should speak English. English is mandatory to every country.

By 2nd-year high school student Yun So Hyeon:
I started to study English when I was 4 years old, so English is very friendly to me. I think studying a foreign language is very fun. I want to be a secretary in the future. English is very important to be a secretary. I'm interested in many other countries, so I have to study English to learn many things about other countries' cultures.

  1. To those students who like American Dramas, which dramas do you like the best?

  2. I wish my students felt the same as your kids. I like how your students realize that "English is mandatory to every country" and that "we live in a global generation, so if we can't use English, we will be outsiders from the world." My students have a don't know, don't care attitude about learning English, which I find very sad! It will be extremely hard for them to travel around the world.

Again, I enjoyed reading this blog :)

  3. Choi Yun Hui I hope you will be an English teacher. It is a very fun and important job. You can do it! You write English very well. Keep practicing.

Yun So Hyeon I am happy you like to learn about other cultures. What countries do you want to travel to and learn about this year?

  4. Sun Kyung, I hope that you are able to travel all around the world in the future. When I traveled in Southeast Asia, I met many Koreans. I could chat with them using Korean and English. But although not everyone can speak Korean, many people can speak English and recognize its importance for global communication. Good luck in your studies!
